Tanning is one of the most popular beauty craze. A lot of people want to get the perfect tan just like Jessica Alba and Jennifer Lopez. However, the sun is not always available to give you an even tan. You may also want to avoid the crowd when tanning. Thus, using a tanning or sun bed has been a good solution for many people especially in the United States. The use of tanning beds has further two options: going to tanning salon and having a sun bed at home. Whatever you choose, you need to know how to use it. If you choose to buy your own tanning bed, make sure that you know how to clean it.
Using a Tanning Bed
There are different types of tanning beds. Before using one, you should make sure its type and the safety precautions given by its manufacturer. If you will go to a tanning salon, make sure that you inquire and listen to the staff when discussing about the sun bed especially if it is your first time. If you opt to buy your own sun bed, make sure that you fully read the user’s manual or guide before slipping in to the bed. Each type of sun bed has its own suggested maximum time of exposure. For instance, low pressure tanning beds have the same UV rays from the sun and can burn your skin easily.
If you will go to a (reputable) tanning salon, you will need to fill out a skin analysis form. This is used to analyze the type and color of your skin before tanning. You will also indicate that kind of tanning that you want so the salon staffs can identify the best sun bed for you.
Using a sun bed requires some accessory materials such as goggles. Goggles are used to protect your eye from the UV rays. Most tanning salons will provide goggles for each of their clients but it is still ideal to bring one. Always make sure that your eyes are covered whenever having a sun bed session to protect them from UVA and UVB rays.
You will also need to put some tanning lotion on your skin before hitting a sun bed. You will also need to make sure that your skin is moisturized. Not only tanning can dry up the skin but moisturized skin also gets the perfect tan easily.
After the preparation, set the timer and hit start. It is advisable to tan for 20 minutes or less. When done tanning, you will need a towel to wipe your skin. Taking a bath or shower after tanning is not recommended.
Cleaning a Tanning Bed
After using a home sun bed, you will also need to clean it. Cleaning can help prevent tanning warts and can maximize the efficiency of your sun bed. Take off the plastics covering the tanning lamps and bulbs and clean the reflector using a damp cloth. You should also clean and wipe the dust off of the ballast tray beneath the main bed as well as the fans in the cover.

Tanning beds are used to get the skin tone you want but did you know that it was not invented for that purpose? It is definitely a good alternative to natural tanning using sun light. While both the sun and tanning beds can give the same result, many people are opting in using a tanning or sun bed for some reasons.
History of Tanning Beds
The first tanning bed was created not for cosmetic but for medical purposes. It was created by the company Heraeus to identify if sunlight can help in calcium deficiencies. However, the first cosmetic indoor bed for tanning was attributed to Frederick Wolff, a German scientist.
The Benefits of Tanning Beds
One benefit of using tanning beds is that you will get privacy. You can tan at the beach with dozens of people. It may be noisy and or too crowded. Another reason why some people do not want to tan at the beach is they are not confident enough with the way their skin currently looks. A good alternative is to go to a tanning salon where you can hire tanning beds. Another alternative is to have your own sun bed at home especially if you tan artificially very often. Having a sun bed at home will also allow you to get a tan whenever you want even if the sun is down.
Another benefit of sun beds is that you can ensure getting an even tan. While you can get a tan easily from the sun, the tanning beds can ensure better results.
Lastly, tanning beds (which are originally created for medical purposes) also have medical benefits. It can help people who have disorders related to deficiency of vitamin D. the treatment can be at home in the form of residential sun beds. It can also be used in photo therapy treatment, a treatment commonly given to people who have seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
The Safety of Tanning Beds
There are researches stating that tanning beds can hasten skin cancer and other skin disorders. However, you will find that these researches are referring to excessive use of tanning beds. Thus, a moderate artificial tanning through residential or commercial tanning beds is generally safe. In addition, tanning beds give the users the choice on the dosage of ultraviolet rays so it is possible to minimize or avoid the adverse effect of artificial tanning. After all, you also get ultraviolet rays even if you use the sun for tanning. There is also a recommended maximum exposure time when using tanning beds to avoid too much exposure to UV rays.

The sun bed is originally invented for medical purposes. Today, it is commonly used for cosmetic purposes such as getting the perfect tan that is the biggest craze among beauty and fashion conscious people. Nevertheless, sun bed’s medical use is also appreciated. It can be used for treating conditions such as vitamin D disorders and SAD. When it comes to safety, sun beds are claimed to be dangerous for the skin due. Nevertheless, they are ideal to be used in moderate frequency and dosage of UV rays in each tanning bed session.

Tanning is certainly a craze among women and some men today. Even teenagers are dying to lie on one of the tanning beds just to get a nice skin tone. Aside from hitting the beach or lying under the sun in public, going to tanning salons where tanning or sun beds are available is one of your options. However, these tanning salons can be packed in most days given that tanning is very popular at present. A good solution is to buy a residential tanning bed. You can enjoy tanning at the comfort of your home where you do not have to deal with the crowd not only now but for a long time.
When planning to buy a tanning bed, you will need to identify the type of tanning bed that is right for you considering your skin type. Should you buy a low pressure tanning bed? Or, will high pressure tanning bed be best for you? You should identify the type and tone of your skin. You can also ask the supplier or dealer of tanning beds for suggestions. Nevertheless, high pressure tanning beds are recommended especially for home use. They provide a higher amount of UVA and lower dosage of UVB, which can be harmful for the skin at prolonged exposure. The lower pressure sun beds are just like the sun that emits UVB in a greater amount compared with UVA. It is also advisable to look for a sun bed that will give 2% of UVB out of the total UV rays.
You can find brand new and used tanning beds for sale. Brand new tanning beds will definitely be higher priced than the used ones. With brand new sun beds, you can rest assured that there is no damage in different parts of the equipment. Nevertheless, checking for defects is always recommended. It is also possible to find a used tanning bed that is in good condition. You just need to keep looking and evaluate each option that you will find.
In addition, there are sun bed dealers that accept financing. This is great for you if want to have a tanning bed but do not have enough money to buy one. It is easy to look for sun bed financing programs on the Web.
Owning a tanning bed at home is great. You can get a tan anytime and you would not have to go to a tanning salon or anywhere where you can get UV rays. However, having a tanning bed at home will also require you to clean and maintain it. Wiping off the dirt and dust from the lamps and bulbs and cleaning the cooling fan are some of the tasks you can add to your chores once you opt to buy a residential sun bed.
Many people definitely want to get the perfect tan. This could be easily achieved with the use of a tanning bed. While there are salons that offer tanning beds for lease, you can also own a new or used sun bed. There are also financing programs to help you own a tanning bed. Make sure that you choose the best tanning bed for your skin and that you clean it regularly for optimum performance.

Sun tanning beds, discovered by Heraeus Company that too accidentally while they were trying to discover light using high pressure metal halide. They find out that device discovered is emitting ultraviolet light in addition to the visible light. That time they were known as tanning lamps. Then it were the Wolff brother which bought tanning beds in USA by combining large number of tanning lamps of around 20 to 40. Then another invention was done that was tanning booths. The major differences between them was in tanning beds, tanning is done by lying down while tanning booths are used for standing out purpose.
These beds have major use in salons, for cosmetic surgery and medical purposes. It is advantageous because it is a device which do tanning in less time, amount of tanning requires, provides required SPF, indoor tanning and regulation of vitamin D. These beds are used for the treatment of the diseases such as keratosis, psoriasis and eczema. Some doctors provide membership to tanning beds for treating these diseases and even some insurance companies consider tanning beds under med claim if they are prescribed by the doctor.
It is scientifically proved that tanning beds are bad for your skin. Tanning beds emit harmful UV radiations which lead to premature aging as well as three major types of skin cancer i.e. basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma. But for some people, the bronze glow and looks overpower the dangers that they may face and could lead to deadly diseases. So if one to get a tan at any condition, there are many methods that are safe for getting tanned. It is possible to get tanned by many natural and safe ways rather than directly being exposed to the direct UV rays as one would go for in a tanning bed or the tanning booth. Such methods are available and this article of mine will try to divert you towards these methods rather than getting the harmful tanning by using tanning beds or tanning booths.
• Natural Sun Tanning
One can hit at the beach and can have tanning or by lying at the backyard of his own home. One can argue that the sun accelerates the synthesis of vitamin D in the skin which is also a good sign as it helps in generating calcium for our bones and let the bones even stronger to resist the fracture. this calcium problem is true but it does not overpower the bad and ill effects of the tanning beds. Sun light also carries the same amount of the UV rays as the tanning beds do. But as it is natural source, it does not let the rays be responsible for the harmful cancer or wrinkles or bad eyes effect on the human body. Once can use sunscreens and lotions if they are afraid of sunburns which could be caused by natural sunlight “UV radiations. Natural sunlight is even present free of cost, isn’t that interesting offer to choose sun light for tanning?
• Air Brush Tanning
Airbrush tanning is a ten minutes fast process which could be applies on skin and best part is this that it looks like natural tanning. This tanning method is considered and used for natural tanning looks. In this technique tanning is done using a compressor and an airbrush, hence the name comes as airbrush tanning. This technique is also useful as the technique has control in our hands only, we can apply the tanning according to our own wish such as by applying less tanner at dark areas such as elbows, knees and blemishes as they absorb more color than any other part of the body. The tan obtained is streak free, even from all directions and can be applied till hairline and thus giving it the natural look.
• Sunless Tanning Lotions and Sprays
Since the ancestors time i.e. from the 16th century this technique is in use and is applied for the good results. With the advancement of world, today’s tanning lotions have better results and are easy to apply then the traditional lotions. But one needs to be very careful while applying these lotions as one need to take care while applying at elbows, knees, hairline, white hands etc so that the proportion of tanning should be correct and tanning should not turn patchy. Some of the companies provide the offer that the lotions could correct the patchy tanning and lead them to the even coverage. These lotions and sprays are the best and effective solution if they are applied according to the instructions of the manufacturers. One should always check their expiry date before purchasing and should use government approved, good brand products for the purpose, then one will find this method best and easiest for tanning.
• Tanning Pills
Tanning pills, an alternative for not tanning, not as good for health as natural light but not as bad as tanning beds. Three types of tanning pills are available in the market namely as caretenoid pills, tyrosine pills. The other pills which are available do not have the substantial effect and they are only the agglomerates of vitamin and proteins. Caretenoid pills when evaluated scientifically, it is found that it can turn carrot into orange and oranges into blonde color, and thus it can also cause skin by tanning by darkening it. This pill is banned in America because of the health reasons as such pills can cause major health problems especially of skin and eyes. The tanning done by these pills is even not effective because it results into uneven and patched tanning. While tyrosine pills act as the tanning activators and thus increase the activity of the tanning. The conclusion is that the pills are not good and effective measure to do tanning.
One should mix the above solutions and opt for the best one from the above points and should prevent themselves from the deadly diseases such as cancer.

Tanning beds are known as sun beds in the common language. It is a kind of device which emits artificial UV radiations for the purpose of skin tanning and is majorly used in cosmetic surgeries and medical purposes. Tanning beds emit two kind of radiation of UV especially UVA and UVB. UVA are the large wavelength radiation rays which constitute of 97% of the total UV radiations while UVB are the small wavelength radiations which are 3% of rest of the radiations.
Tanning beds were first used in Australia and then in United Kingdom and other countries of Europe. Tanning beds are used because of various benefits as the tanning beds are used for the indoor tanning as it leads to the better results in the less time. It causes limited amount of tanning and sunburns. The other advantage is that it provides the required amount of SPF i.e., 2 to 4 which is the require amount of the body. The cosmetics which provide SPF is the large then the required amount. With the help of tanning beds the amount of vitamin D required for the body could also be regulated as it does not let vitamin D present over skin to accumulate as the UV rays penetrate to a deeper limit then the natural sun rays.
But tanning beds got more disadvantages then the benefits. These radiations cause the skin cancer of three types namely basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma. The research reports by US public health service and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) had proved that women who go for this artificial tanning process once a week are 55 % more prone to skin cancer rather than the women who have not used these beds. And the women who are using cheap home tanning beds twice a week are at 150% more risk that they will suffer from melanoma. These radiations also causes genetic mutation in two kinds of the cells by either eating them away and inducing carcinogenic effects which causes problems in the future generations and sometimes lead to miscarriage of the mother. Using sun bed may also causes some eye diseases such as arc eye. Other additional side effects include wrinkles, sunspots, loss of elasticity in skin and early ageing.
This article of mine would consist mainly of the history, construction and mechanism of the tanning beds.
History of tanning beds
Tanning beds was the accidental discovery by the German company named as Heraeus. They were trying to develop light for the home and industrial purposes. They were using metal halides for the purpose and they found that the lamps of high pressure metal halide variety are also emitting UV radiations in addition to the visible light. In 1920s, the company started selling the tanning devices having only one lamp. The devices which consist of more than one tanning lamp were manufactured in late seventies.
In year 1979, Friedrich Wolff was the man who bought tanning beds to the America for the first time and then he patented these tanning beds under his names. The patent is expired now. That time he started selling the beds by providing licensing to other companies such as ETS, Inc., SCA, Sun Industries, Inc., Montego Bay etc. Then he sold his company to his brother George Wolf, another man who made change in the tanning beds industry.
In year 1986 when Food and Drug Association (FDA) checked these beds, they give a report that there should be labeling of the risks about the eyes, skin problems and the time of exposure. This law was made so that all the lamps which were sold in salons consider the safety about the exposure time and safety measures. Several companies then started making lamps under the license of Wolff’s and they need to use their logo designed as yellow circle with horizontal bars with “Wolff systems” printed in black over it. And the companies which do not use logo, they need to print “Powered by Wolff systems”.
Today, the tanning beds are available in two types namely for commercial use and for the home, the former cost around $30000 to $40000 while the one which could be used in home costs only $3000 to $5000.
Construction and mechanism
The original ballast system used in the tanning beds was made up of the European choke and the magnet which are also the main constituent of the modern tanning beds even other choices such as electronic and high frequency is available nowadays. The lamps used today also use phosphor as the first lamp and emits the same florescent light constituting of the UVA and UVB radiations. Some changes and advancement is made by turning the radiation in a form that they look more the sun like.
They are difficult to prepare as they are very large units in which 6 to 36 lamps need to be fitted in the canopy. The unit requires a filter glass so that majority of UVB emitted could be filtered as it is harmful for the skin. The modern tanning beds are more difficult to manufacture then the traditional ones because in these the alignment of lamps need to be adjusted according to the filter glass.
These beds want the maintenance two to three times in a month if they are used continuously for 48 hours and therefore, empty large sum from pockets for the maintenance.
Nowadays, people are going for the home tanning beds so that they can save time and privacy could be maintained as after this there would be no need to go to the salons frequently. These home tanning beds consist of 16 to 24 lamps in the canopy.
Some companies have provided the device with the help of tanning beds from which the spray tanning could be done using the hand held or special booths. This system leads to the sunless tanning. This is used for the appearance of the tan while the UV exposure.
